Our mission is to instill a love of reading to last a lifetime. With an extensive collection of books, comprehensive reference materials, and access to desktop computers, we are well-equipped to meet the needs of all students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
Each week, K - 6 students have a scheduled block of time in the library determined by grade level. For grades K-4, 30 minutes is allotted each week and grades 5 and 6 spend 45 minutes in the library. During this time, each class is given age-appropriate library instruction and an opportunity to select books, followed by story-time.
Kindergarten students are allowed to check out one book each week. All students in grades 1-6 are encouraged to check out two books each week.
Books are due one week from the check-out date. However, students are able to renew books upon request at the circulation desk.
Library books may be returned at any time, not just on the assigned class day. There is a large book-drop box outside the library where books can be deposited when the library is closed. Please remember that overdue books may limit a student’s ability to check out additional books until a late book is returned.
Library staff members will work with parents in the event that a library book is lost. We realize items can occasionally be misplaced. Notification will be sent home, along with information about replacement options. While we promote responsibility with students, we want to be sensitive to the worry that can arise in these situations.
Due to the enormous generosity of our school community, the Mary L. Malone Library has continued to grow each year. With over 10,000 books in circulation, we are able to offer a wide collection of books that appeal to all levels of readers.
Donations of new or gently used books are always welcome. If a home cannot be found on our shelves or within the building (i.e. perhaps we already have several copies of a donated book), we then share those books with a local school in the City of Rochester.
Sometimes students need help finding books that are at their level. Books that are too easy or too challenging can leave a young reader feeling frustrated. The Five Finger Test for Right Fit Books is a quick way to determine if your child’s book is an appropriate selection.
Open the selected book to a random page and ask your child to read out loud. Hold up a finger each time they encounter a word they are unsure of or do not understand.
1 Finger: | Hold up your thumb when the child misses the first word. This book will be easy. |
2 Fingers: | Hold up your thumb and forefinger in the shape of an L. This will be a good learning book. |
3 Fingers: | Hold up your fingers in the shape of a “W”. This stands for warning that this book may frustrate you and you may not enjoy it. |
4 or 5 Fingers: | Hold up your whole hand. Missing four or more words means it’s time to stop and pick a different book. |

Many students enjoy learning more about their favorite authors. Visiting an author website can provide additional insight into favorite characters, information regarding upcoming new releases, and special messages to encourage students to read more. Below are a few sites:
