Sept.  SAC Minutes

No changes.  B. Sabik moved to approve; seconded by K. Callahan; unanimous approval.

Budget Review

§         The current year budget was reviewed. Questions were brought up regarding Misc. items and what they accounted for. It was noted that these items include prayer cards; bookmarks given by Sr. Christina, items needed for Mary’s birthday in the school, and other petty cash purchases. No other significant issues were noted.  There were no requests for SAC funding.

§         There have been additional checks and deposits made from the magazine drive since the Sept. filing of the budget.  Still waiting for final total from the sale.  We went a bit over the 4% credited amount used for prizes, better prizes were used. This will all be included in the final report.

Committee Reports

Principal’s Report

§         We did quite well with the fourth grade math state test, falling in the 96th percentile. However, the tests are still embargoed by the state (as are all tests throughout the state).  The commissioner needs to release the tests before the scores can be published.

§         The textbook issue has been resolved, although we are still waiting for some late ordered books; students are being provided with the necessary materials in the meantime. BOCES provided math books for grades 1,2,and 3. Hopefully new procedures will be in place and cleared for the 2005-6 school year.

§         There will be more Safe Environment workshops scheduled. Any parent wishing to work in the classroom, or drive on field trips, must take on of these workshops this school year.

§         Parent-Teacher conferences this Fall will again include the student- they will be reviewing their portfolio with the teacher and parent. Parents and teachers are asked to please keep their conference to the scheduled time to avoid unnecessary backups.

§         This is the 50th anniversary year of St Joseph’s School. On October 27th, there will be a meeting regarding this event. More information to follow.

Development

§         No report at this time. Note 50th school anniversary information above.

Enrichment

§         There have been many children signing up for various enrichment groups-participation is very high and activities are going well.

§         Several activities are already being coordinated for next semester.

§         There were many children who signed up for soccer; thank you to all, as monies from this activity are to be directed to classroom computers.

Fundraising

§         The Magazine drive was very successful. Money was slightly down from last year, but expenses were slightly higher. Fewer subscriptions, but a higher number of donations were received. Our goal was met, and more deposits have been made since the Sept. budget.

§         Next event will be the Hockey Auction. Volunteers are greatly needed to help organize coordinate, and steer the event, which is always well attended.  It was suggested that each classroom select one parent rep in order to form a committee for the Hockey Auction

Public Relations

§         Still an open position. Anyone interested is asked to please contact any committee member, also to feel free to sit in on a meeting. B. Sabik has been filling in as needed along with chairing the Enrichment Committee.

Special Events

§         The Parish/School picnic was the best it has been in four years. Many positive comments were received from parents. Father Kevin’s dunking booth was a huge crowd attracter. The children’s games were well received and a lot of fun.

§         Parents are being contacted regarding helping at the Halloween dance. Reservations will be compiled and a list will be at the door on that evening. A DJ has been arranged, as well as games setup for the children. Prizes have been purchased for all activities. Another reminder/reservation form will be included in Wednesday envelopes

Technology

§         The three office computers as well as 10 computer lab machines will be upgraded with new IBM workstations.

§         Liliana Carrano, a school parent, has volunteered to help with the school website. She will be working with Mike Caito. Thank you Liliana!

§      A possible donation of wireless access points is being investigated. This would allow us to provide wireless Internet access throughout the school building. We currently have two laptops with wireless capabilities.

§      Sister plans to contact the Malley building to see if a network drop can be put into meeting room 1. This would allow Internet access in this room for both parish and school use.

Welcoming

§         Getting ready for Catholic Schools Week, which will be during the second week of February.

 Other Topics/Discussion

SCRIP

§         Karen Caterisano presented a program called SCRIP. This program is aimed at helping families offset tuition costs.  Gift certificates and gift cards would be purchased through the school to be used at various businesses. After purchasing gift cards, a percentage of the sale would be credited back to the school. We are looking into implementing this program at St Joseph’s. More info: GLScrip.com

 Ministry Fair

§         The Parish will be holding a Ministry Fair the weekend of November 6th-7th.  The theme is Shape to Share. St. Joseph’s School has been invited to set up a table to recruit volunteers for the various committees and ministries in the school. We are looking for people to help set up and decorate our table, as well as 2 people to man the table after each mass.

 SAC Openings for the year

§         Certain SAC positions are still open this year, as well as other committee terms which will expire at the end of this year. At this time, we are in need of a chair and co-chair for PR, and a co-chair for fundraising. Please contact any committee member for information about these positions.

 2004-2005 SAC Meetings

§         SAC would like to emphasize that ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN to any parent or guardian who wishes to attend.  Meetings are held in the school library on the second Wednesday of each month. Prior notification of attendance is not necessary, and participation in any discussion is encouraged. Minutes from the previous meeting will be included in the Wednesday folder for parents to read. The next meeting will be held on November 10th at 7:00 pm.
