Robots at Work at St. Joseph School!

Students at St. Joseph School in Penfield are experimenting with robots, and learning all about technology, thanks to a special grant from Eastman Kodak Company’s Dollar for Doers program.

The $500 grant, sponsored by school parent Kenneth Keenahan, was used for the purchase of four Robotechnology starter systems and accompanying software, for the LEGO Mindstorms for Schools program being used at St. Joseph.

LEGO Mindstorms for Schools is a powerful tool for learning that converts classrooms into hands-on, minds-on laboratories for experimenting with robots and robotic activities.

The program will be used in Project Discovery for students in third through sixth grades initially, but will be expanded.

“This is a wonderful supplement to the students’ classroom learning,” said Project Discovery coordinator Joan Doyle.”

Members of St. Joseph’s volunteer technology committee, including James Pratt, Dane Overfield, Marc Atkinson, Bill Caterisano, Jerry Urlaub and Chris Godly, worked to make this project a reality at St. Joseph School.

Additional donations from Dr. and Mrs. James Schaeffer went to purchase headsets for the computers.  The Schaeffer’s children were students at St. Joseph School, and Mrs. Schaeffer taught physical education for several years.
